Cardiomyopathy is a weakening of your heart muscle or a change in its structure that causes it not to work properly. There are several different types of cardiomyopathy which can all lead to heart failure.
Cardiomyopathy can be caused by viral infections, heart attacks, alcoholism, long term high blood pressure, lack of nutrition, and many disease states.
Symptoms:
- Shortness of breath that can be caused by lying flat or increased activity.
- Cough due to excess fluid building up in your lungs.
- Fatigue or being tired with activity
- Swelling of your stomach, legs, ankles or feet
- Chest pain
- Having the sensation of feeling your heart beat
- High blood pressure
- Fainting or lightheadedness
- Low amount of urine in the daytime
- Need to go to the bathroom frequently at night
- Having trouble concentrating
- Loss of appetite
- Decreased alertness
Treatment for this disorder may vary from person to person. Your doctor may prescribe certain medications, dietary changes and order certain tests. In severe cases a pacemaker or other devices may be needed. Advanced cases could require a heart transplant.
