Mitral Valve prolapse is a heart problem in which the valve that separates the left upper and left lower chambers of your heart does not close properly. The purpose of your mitral valve is to keep blood on the left side of your heart flowing in one direction. In most cases it is harmless and you do not realize you have this problem. In a small number of cases blood leaks backwards because the valve does not close properly,. This would require surgery to correct the problem.

Mitral Valve prolapse can run in families. It is also common in thin women who may have minor chest wall deformities, scoliosis or other disorders.

Symptoms:

  • Sensation of feeling your heartbeat
  • Chest pain
  • Having trouble breathing after activity
  • Feeling tired
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath when lying flat

Treatment:

Your doctor will do a physical exam and listen to your heart. He will listen for a different sound or murmur with his stethoscope. If he hears a murmur he may order other test to confirm his diagnosis.

He may prescribe medications to help you with this problem. If you have severe mitral valve prolapse surgery may be recommended to replace your heart valve.
