A heart murmur is a blowing, whooshing, or rasping sound produced by blood flow through your heart valves or near your heart. It can be loud or soft in sound. A heart murmur does not necessarily indicate you have heart disease. Although a heart murmur may occur when your heart valve does not close properly causing blood to leak backward or if your blood is trying to flow through a narrow or stiff heart valve.

Treatment:

There are many different reasons that you may have a heart murmur. Your doctor will listen to your heart with his stethoscope. He may order an echocardiogram which is an ultrasound of your heart to find the exact cause of the murmur. He may order other tests to rule out any heart abnormalities. Talk to your doctor if you have questions or concerns.
